§204. General Principle of ἄν with the Infinitive.

The infinitive can be used with ἄν in all cases in which a finite verb would have ἄν if it stood in its place.
This is found chiefly in indirect discourse, in which each tense of the infinitive with ἄν represents the corresponding tenses of the indicative or optave with ἄν in the direct form. The context must decide whether the indicative or optative is represented in each case.
