This optative referring to past must be especially distinguished from the optative in ordinary protasis reffering to the future (455). Εἰ and ἐάν in this construction are often almost equivalent to ὅτε or ὅταν (which are the more common expressions), and the protasis has precisely the same construction as the relative sentences of 532.
