In dependent sentences, where the construction allows both the subjunctive and the optative, the subjunctive is used if the leading verb is primary, and the optative if it is secondary. (See 21.) E.g.
Πράττουσιν ἃ ἂν βούλωνται, they do whatever they please ; but ἕπραττον ἃ βούλοιντο, they did whatever they pleased.
