The imperfect (seldom the aorist) of μέλλω with the infinitive expresses past intention, expectation, or necessity. E.g.
Κύκλωψ, ουκ ἄρ᾿ ἔμελλες ἀνάλκιδος ἀνδρὸς ἑταίρους ἔδμεναι ἐν σπῆι γλαφυρῷ, so you were not after all to eat, etc. (cf. 39). Od. ix. 475. See Il. ii. 36. Ἔμελλόν σ᾿ ἆρα κινήσειν ἐγώ, I thought I should start you off. Ar. Nub. 1301. Ἐπιστάτην λαβεῖν ὃς ἔμελλεν αὐτὼ καλώ τε κἀγαθὼ ποιήσειν. Plat. Ap. 20 A. Ἐμέλλησαν ἐμβάλλειν. Thuc. i. 134.
