§157.

§158. ⇒

直説法における格言的なアオリストおよび現在完了

英語原文

General truths are more commonly expressed in Greek, as in English, by the present. The present and aorist appear together above, in nearly the same sense ; the gnomic aorist is, however, commonly distinguished from the present by referring to a single or a sudden occurrence, while the present (as usual) implies durarion. Thus in Dem. ii. 10, above, the aorist ἤνθησεν implies a sudden blossoming out with hopes, as opposed to the continuance or repetition expressed by ἀντέχει, hold out, φωρᾶται, are detected, and καταρρεῖ, fall in ruin.
