英語原文
These expressions may also be followed by ὅτι and a causal sentence, as in Plat. Theaest. 142A, ἐθαύμαζον ὅτι οὐχ οἷός τ᾿ ἦ εὐρεῖν. The construction with εἰ gives a milder or more polite form of expression, putting the object of the wonder etc. into the form of a supposition, instead of stating it as a fact as we should do in English. They may also be followed by protases expressing ordinary conditions, which have nothing peculiar : see Isoc. xv.17, ἀγπητὸν (sc. ἐστίν) ἢν ἐκαλαβεῖν δυνηθῶσι τὸ δίκαιον, they must be content if they are able (cf. xix.20) : and Plat. Prot. 315E, Dem. ii.23 (εἰ περιῆμεν).
